This time of the year is often lambasted by many as too commercial and artificial as people pretend to be happy while spending copious amounts of money. There’s some truth to that, but to only look at Christmas through such a critical lens guarantees you miss the point.

That point, of course, is the celebration of the Light of the World being born, Jesus Christ. Without Him we are all lost, because no matter how good our works are, there is no erasing our own inevitable sins and flaws.

The fact He was born gives us all hope. He is our Savior and His birth is worthy of celebration.

However, that doesn’t mean you have to spend copious amounts of money or engage in all the classic traditions. In fact, I think there’s value in stepping back from all the shopping, decorating, and other fanfare to take a moment or many to simply contemplate what Jesus’ birth means for you personally.

Doing that, I believe, is the best way to celebrate this season. After all, He is the reason for its widespread observance and for good reason.

I hope you do enjoy your Christmas, whether it’s alone or in a big family gathering. Either way, we all have a reason to be joyful.
